Pay by instalment on government benefit

David's story

Parking ticket

David was driving to the city to celebrate his best friend's 21st birthday. After spending 20 minutes looking for a parking spot and eager to meet up with his friends, he decided to park in a No Stopping Zone. After having a great night, he came back to his car to discover a $242 parking ticket on his windscreen.

David receives New Start and cannot afford to pay the fine in full by the deadline. He visited the State Debt Recovery (SDR) website to find out his options. He found that he could have more time to pay his fine off fortnightly through his government benefit. All he needed to do was phone SDR before the due date, to arrange early enforcement to pay by instalments.

He called SDR to set up early enforcement and is now paying $20 a fortnight directly from his benefit until the fine is fully paid. Because he phoned before the deadline on the reminder notice, he avoided the extra $65 and potentially losing his licence.
